Building MOCs for beginners: assembling a starter pack
You don't want to build a set following instructions — you want to create your own models. But where do you start?
Step 1: a basic bulk bag (1 kg)
Start with one 1 kg bag for a broad assortment. For around €35, you'll get ~800 pieces in all main colours. Enough to get a feel for what you enjoy working with.
Step 2: a baseplate or platform
Your MOC needs a foundation. Good options:
- 32×32 baseplate — €5-8 new, ~25×25 cm building surface
- 48×48 baseplate — €10-15, for larger projects
- Or build a plate platform from your bulk bag (combining 16×16 plates)
Step 3: one or two targeted additions
After your first bag, you'll know what you're missing. Often it's:
- 1×1 round plates (for details, flowers, lamps)
- Tiles (smooth top surfaces for streets, roofs, floors)
- Slope pieces (for roofs, inclines)
- Hinges and clip pieces (for moving parts)
Buy these strategically via BrickLink or a second targeted bulk bag.
Step 4: practise
The foundation for good MOCs is trying lots and not being afraid of rough first results. Tips:
- Start small (a little house of 8×8) before tackling a big project

- Build in colour batches — first your structure, then your details
When you're ready for more
After 5-10 MOCs, you'll have a feel for what you need. Then invest in: targeted bricks, a better sorting system, a photo table for your creations, and optionally your own BrickLink store for surplus pieces.
The best starter budget? €50-€80 — a 1 kg bag + a baseplate + a 500 g supplementary bag. Then you'll be busy for weeks.
